Site 2 - Nunhead Cemetery

After some rushed train travel from north east London to south east London on the over ground line...we were...a little too late.

SO we took some photos through the gate and walked around the periphery which included an extremely steep route along a path between the cemetery wall and a site of two water reservoirs.

The top of the hill a 1:10 slope is said to be aligned with the hill in the Highgate cemetery and overlooks St Pauls Cathedral in the centre of this line of sight. From this hill top, one has a panoramic vista of the London skyline looking from the south of the Thames, Northwards. Some interesting, yet slightly unnerving symbols on the gate of the cemetery remind people entering the site of their mortality through the upside down torch and the empty hourglass, encompassed by the wings of an angel and demon.

Friendly note for next time CLOSING TIME. (Which I ended up having written down in my book anyway. #fail)

 Site visit 1 - Abney Park Cemetery

Founded in 1840 as one of the 'Magnificent seven' cemeteries developed by authorities at the time around, what was then the outskirts of London city centre, Abney Park is in the North East of the London precinct. It houses, at its centre, a beautiful disused chapel - now more famous as a filming location and informal theatre.

The 53 acre cemetery has between 200 000 and 240 000 recorded burial sites, all in various states of natural overgrowth within the woodland site.

As the cemetery stands it is already a sanctuary - a peaceful, cool park where people seemed to take refuge from the noisy, commercial roads adjacent to the entrance.

{ - Crit 1 - 8 February 2011 - }

So after our first crit - crit dialogue still to come - we may be changing the name of the thesis...which makes this website address a little irrelevant...but we learning as we go. I suppose this blog will pay tribute to the idea of a living museum anyway.

The whole process of recording the process - if you will - may or may not be a part of what we are investigating in our project, but we will rather start the process now and decide to use it at a later stage because we have it.

We have compiled a really amateur video in which we actually had to take the speaking out because it was rendered useless when the whole thing came together...we will note this in future when filming. (Also...the video screen does not automatically rotate...so some head tilting may be required...)

Hopefully however, it gives a little insight into the night before pinning up...crit day and post crit studio...these stages of studio life will become clearer as we go through the thesis period and as our filming becomes a little more skilled.
